STRUCTURAL ARM FOR SAR WINCH

Sector

Aerospace

CLIENT

Leonardo

Leonardo asked Loson to make the support structure for the rescue winch for SAR helicopters. This is a critical component because of the task it must perform and the stress it is subjected to.

The component that supports the recovery winch has a structural function, must meet aerodynamic requirements to reduce drag during flight, and, given its function, must meet high safety requirements to protect the crew and the person being transported, as well as lightweight standards.

To meet the demand, Loson called on its expertise in making one-piece composite tubulars and material coupling.

We engineered the production, taking care of material selection, tooling and process design, of considerable complexity. The result is a tubular support of complex shape, made of 50 ply fabric, complete with metal inserts for mounting interfaces, integrated in lamination. Fiberglass elements were integrated in the fuselage attachment area to provide electrical insulation and corrosion protection, and metal sheets were used to improve structural bearing strength.
